Historic fire station which was subsequently used as offices now has permission to be converted into a family house through the Prior Approval process.
The Old Fire Station's main facade faces south toward Mortlake High Street, whilst it's rear overlooks the River Thames. Situated within the Mortlake Conservation Area, the building, while not listed, is recognised as a structure of townscape merit. It sits adjacent to the Grade II* listed "The Limes".
Externally, the Old Fire Station boasts a formal, symmetrical facade primarily constructed with London stock brickwork, accented by red brick quoins and window surrounds. The facade features two arched openings, originally used for the fire tenders, now filled with windows or doors for the office function.
To secure the approval for a conversion to residential use, we checked all the Prior Approval requirements and had helpful pre-application discussions with Richmond Council. The main area of discussion related to whether The Old Fire Station fell within the curtilage of the adjacent Listed Building. Careful heritage research led to confirmation that the building itself was within the curtilage and therefore the change of use could be determined through the Prior Approval route.
