Heritage Potential successfully secured consent for the installation of an internally illuminated digital sign outside the Welcome Centre at St Albans Cathedral.

The site lies within a highly sensitive historic environment, including the St Albans Conservation Area and the setting of the Grade I Listed Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Albans and the St Albans Abbey Scheduled Monument. The area also includes a number of adjacent listed buildings and forms part of a wider historic townscape.

The sign is essential to promote the Cathedral Welcome Centre, encourage visitor attendance, inform of events and improve general wayfinding.

To support the application, Heritage Potential prepared a robust Heritage Statement, which included a proportionate assessment of the significance of the Cathedral, its setting, and surrounding heritage assets, as well as visual impact analysis from key viewpoints within the precinct and public realm.

The findings concluded that the modest and sensitively positioned sign would preserve the character and appearance of the Conservation Area and would not harm the significance of the scheduled monument or nearby listed buildings.

In addition, Heritage Potential reviewed existing archaeological information, including from the planning history, confirming that no further archaeological work was required to support the proposal.

The approved signage will assist with visitor orientation at a key entrance to the Cathedral complex, supporting its internationally significant function as a place of worship, education, cultural activity, and community engagement
